Yet, this takes time to create, many people to agree, and revolution to take a back seat to evolution. Innovation and technology have been more disruptive then ever before in human history which seems to push out any hope of a Utopia. If a Utopia is even what we want or need.
Business choices often imitate technoutopianism by default. We invest in a concept of solving a given business problem. Teams are formed to build consensus on use and deployment. Systems are created to support adoption. Policies are made to enforce compliance. We aim to the goal of a Utopia that allows our business to operate most efficiently or the betterment of everyone in the enterprise.
We are building the seeds of our discontent from the start. A small group often dissidents are created from the choices made. Technology is found or created that supersedes choices made in the process. Eventually innovation and change is suppressed in order to achieve the intended goal of an unspoken Utopia. People or systems are evaluated more for compliance in the early development phases then opportunity. Later evaluations are made on how well people or systems support the progress to Utopia. Those who speak out or detract from the belief or execution of this opportunity are often shunned or worse, expunged from the faith.
Do we need Utopia? Do we even know it’s what we are building when we start? Do we fully understand the impact and the unspoken compliance it creates? We need the faith of creation and completion, with the tolerance of innovation. Management needs to understand the actions they take in the context of building success. Staging for opportunity and value creation while preserving innovation and growth.
Utopia is possible, if we allow it to evolve and sometimes dissolve . A Utopia where disruption is part of the vision and evolution is part of the process. Utopia is a place along the journey not the destination. How allow others to share in that vision is managements greatest challenge!
